Abstract

Osteoma is a benign tumor, one of the most common benign neoplasms of the paranasal sinuses. Osteoma is more often localized in the frontal sinuses, less often in the ethmoid labyrinth. Extremely rarely in the maxillary sinus, sphenoid and in the nasal cavity.

In the development of osteoma, 2 periods are distinguished – latent and overt. Large osteomas are characterized by rhinological, orbital and neurological symptoms. Small osteomas of the paranasal sinuses are asymptomatic and are detected during X-ray examinations and CT scans. A frequent complication of osteoma is mucocele, pyocele. Treatment of osteomas in the presence of clinical manifestations is only surgical.

4 different clinical cases of osteomas are described, namely a combination with pyocele and orbital complications; with pronounced neurological symptoms; giant compact osteoma of the maxillary sinus and the presence of 2 osteomas in the frontal sinus.

In all cases, the operations were performed by the classical method using endoscopic techniques for visualization and control.

Keywords: osteoma, paranasal sinuses, symptoms, complications, treatment, surgery.
