Abstract

Introduction: The diagnosis and treatment of middle ear diseases remain a significant clinical challenge, despite advancements in highly informative and accessible imaging modalities, particularly cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Aim: To assess the potential of CBCT of the temporal bone in the diagnosis of secretory otitis media.

Material and Methods: A comprehensive clinical and radiological examination was conducted on 26 patients with secretory otitis media. The mean age of the patients was 32.69±4.8 years. Structural changes in the middle ear were assessed using CBCT.

Results: The study analyzed the structural changes in the middle ear cavity associated with secretory otitis media and provided a rationale for using CBCT in its diagnosis.

Conclusions

  1. Due to its high spatial resolution, CBCT of the temporal bones allows us to identify changes characteristic of secretory otitis media.
  2. Typical CBCT findings in secretory otitis media include the presence of pathological material within the middle ear cavities, disruption of mastoid pneumatization, thickening of the tympanic cavity mucosa, and thickening of the tympanic membrane.
  3. The findings from CBCT imaging of the temporal bone in patients with secretory otitis media enable the determination of an optimal treatment strategy for the patient.

Keywords: secretory otitis media, temporal bone, Eustachian tube, tympanic cavity, cone-beam computed tomography.
