Abstract

Purpose of the study: Adaptation and compilation of a Ukrainian-language questionnaire on complaints, diagnostics of spatial hearing disorders in patients with bilateral barotraumatic sensorineural or mixed hearing loss, their relationship with psychoemotional disorders in comparison with a group of healthy individuals regarding the choice of methods of further rehabilitation.

Materials and methods: To assess the auditory function of patients with hearing loss due to barotrauma, we identified three general areas, namely, patient complaints related to impaired functional abilities of the inner ear, speech intelligibility, spatial and emotional characteristics of perception of new hearing quality. Therefore, to question patients about the state of auditory function, we chose as a basis the questionnaire card for the diagnosis of sensorineural hearing disorders in acute trauma, the spatial and speech hearing questionnaire and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS).

Results: The high level of correlation between the degree of hearing changes, the level of anxiety and depressive state that we have identified is one of the important indicators of the reliability of the data of the presented questionnaires. The study of their validity in the studied groups showed that patients with impaired auditory function had not only a pronounced subjective impairment of spatial hearing, but also a change in the psychoemotional background of the organism. A decrease in auditory function can lead not only to spatial hearing impairment, impaired speech understanding and determination of the source of localization of the auditory signal, but also affect the psychological aspects of patients’ lives.

Conclusions: The results of our study proved the high efficiency and validity of the complaints and hearing questionnaire, its high degree of correlation of indicators with the hospital anxiety and depression scale, the use of which is possible in medical practice as an additional diagnostic method for assessing the quality of the patient’s hearing and his psycho-emotional background, the correction of which is of great importance in the treatment and further rehabilitation of auditory function.

Keywords: barotraumatic hearing loss, psycho-emotional disorders, hearing quality questionnaire, hospital anxiety and depression scale.
