Abstract

Introduction: Tinnitus significantly impairs the quality of life of many patients. In recent years, this problem has become even more important in Ukraine due to the consequences of the military aggression of the russian federation. As of today, there is no valid questionnaire in the Ukrainian language to measure the influence of tinnitus.

The aim of the study: Proper translation into Ukrainian and cross-cultural adaptation of the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) will allow obtaining a powerful tool for assessing severity and negative impact of tinnitus on Ukrainian-speaking patient’s quality of life.

Method: The translation procedure into Ukrainian and cross-cultural adaptation of the Tinnitus Functional Index was implemented according to the principles of good practice (Principles of Good Practice for the Translation and Cultural Adaptation Process for Patient-Reported Outcomes).

Results: The author’s consent to translate the questionnaire and a license from the Oregon Health & Science University to use the Tinnitus Functional Index were obtained. A detailed report on each of the 10 steps in the translation and adaptation process is provided. The selection of patients with tinnitus for cognitive debriefing is specified.

Conclusions: Ukrainian translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the TFI questionnaire was implemented by the Principles of Good Practice for the Translation and Cultural Adaptation Process for Patient-Reported Outcomes. A Ukrainian version of the questionnaire will be validated for clinical and research use.

Keywords: back translation, cross-cultural adaptation, Health Care Surveys, Patient Reported Outcome Measure, quality of life, TFI, tinnitus, Tinnitus Functional Index.
